2017 Race Day Info

Hello everyone!

Here is some more info.  And links to cue sheets and GPX files are below, make sure you “right click” and “save as” to obtain the files. If you just click the links, you will get gibberish files.

There is still significant damage to the roads from last year’s enormous storms.  We will be covering the entire course on the Friday prior, and there may be last-minute changes.  Any last minute changes will be marked, changed on the cue sheet, and a new GPS file may be issued Friday night.  We are intending to keep as similar of a course as last year as possible.

Who: You and thegreentunnel, and 196 other gravel riders

What: 60 or 100 miles of gravel in Bayfield County

When: 9:00 am start for the 100 mile, 9:10 am start for the 60 mile

Where: Cable, WI

Why: To do a true wilderness gravel race, away from it all, and being self-reliant

Rules: Signing of a liability release waiver will be required for you to take the start. Our events are self-supported. Do not count on any aid stations on the course, bring enough food and water for the entire event, and be prepared to be in the woods as weather and course condition change. You are responsible for you! Cue sheets will be provided, but the course is open to cars and other users, and is not marked. You will get your cue sheet in trade for your signed waiver. Equipment must be a bicycle with two wheels, and only human power. CPSC approved helmets are required.

The course is pretty much set, although there will be one more drive-through the day before the event to insure that the roads good.  The attached gpx file shows the general idea of the course, but is not guaranteed to be the exact course, it can always change.  A big thank you to Parker from ACF this year for scouting out some new territory for us!

We have been getting a lot of questions in this week, so here are some FAQs:

Will there be any water on the course? The Hungry Bear 100 is a self-supported event, and we recommend that you start the race with all the food, water and equipment that you will need to complete the event. THIS YEARS COURSE DOES NOT PASS ANY PUBLIC ESTABLISHMENTS.

What are the starting times? Registration starts at 7am, the Hungry Bear 100 starts at 9am, and the 60 rolls out at 9:10am. Both races have a gentle roll out of town heading north out of Cable.

How do I get my number plate and cue sheet? Starting at 7am on Saturday morning, you can find us at the Rivers Eatery, under the Terrene Tires tent, where you can sign the waiver and receive your number plate and cue sheets. There is no registration Friday night.

Timing: We are using White River Sports Timing this year for real-time RFID based timing!

Will there be GPS and Cue sheets? Due to popular demand, a GPX file is attached download. However, we recommend using the cue sheets, and every racer will be given them. We do not recommend going out and relying on something with batteries. If you do not have a GPS or program, try gpsvisualizer.com to see them. There is a slight course change from last year, so please make sure to use the files linked below.

What does the 60 mile course look like? The 60 mile course will start and end in the same place as the 100 course, in downtown Cable.  I

What else should I know? The Hungry Bear is run on entirely open, public roads. There can and will be cars and other road users out there, and you must be aware of this at all times.  Wearing a CPSC approved helmet, and following all road laws is required. The course crosses major highways 4 times, and great care should be taken when crossing. This year will be an adventure. There are road washouts that we may be hiking through.

What should I do after the race? Join us at the Rivers Eatery for beer, pizza, and the winning hugs for the top finishers.

Parking: There is very limited parking in downtown Cable, so you are asked to please park in the parking lot of the old Cable school.  Check out the cool graphic I made to show you where you can and cannot park.
